A BioCentury Quick Guide
This glossary covers the components of the Innovation Distillery dashboard to hep subscribers successfully navigate the tool as quickly as possible.
Added: The date the BioCentury Analyst Briefing was published and the innovation was added to the Innovation Distillery.
Analyst Briefing Link: When the Innovation Distillery data table is exported, the hyperlink in the BioCentury Analyst Briefing column is no longer present, so this link serves as the access point to the briefing on BioCentury’s website.
Article Date: The title or Digital Object Identifier (doi) for the primary research article where the innovation was sourced. The hyperlink directs users to the Primary Article on the Journal publisher's website.
Author Countries: The Country or Countries in which each Corresponding Author’s affiliated Institution is located.
Author Email(s): The email addresses for the Corresponding Authors listed in the Primary Article.
Author(s) Institutions: The Affiliated Institutions for the Corresponding Authors. When an author is affiliated with multiple institutions, only one primary Institution is listed. Cues used to determine an author’s primary Institution include the author’s institutional e-mail address.
BCIQ Profile (within Narrow by Affiliated Target): A link to each Target’s profile record in BCIQ.
Note: The BCIQ Target profile displays Products, Deals, and Financings affiliated with this Target, as well as the BioCentury Articles that mention the Target.
BioCentury Analyst Briefing: The BioCentury Analyst Briefing title summarizes the translational opportunity for each innovation. The hyperlink directs users to the full briefing on BioCentury’s website, which captures the innovation’s molecular mechanism and the preclinical evidence supporting its potential therapeutic effects.
Clear Filters: This button clears all previously applied filters and keyword searches to reset the page.
Corresponding Author(s): The Affiliated Experts to whom correspondence should be addressed regarding the innovations in the Primary Article. Typically these are the principal investigators (PIs) of the laboratories that conducted the research published in the Primary Article. When there are multiple Corresponding Authors, each author has an associated number that can be used to match them to their respective Institutions and Countries in those respective columns.
Disclosures: All the text included in the Primary Article’s Conflict of Interest, Declaration of Interest, or otherwise named Disclosures section. Available for innovations added Oct. 12, 2023 or after.
Disease: The Disease area (e.g., “Cancer”) addressed by the innovation. The Disease categories are the same ones used by BioCentury’s BCIQ Database.
Exp. System: The preclinical experimental model system(s) used in the Primary Research Articles. Model System Classifications include:
Explore by Disease Biology: A report that helps Innovation Distillery users explore Innovations by following a journey that uses disease categories and molecular targets as key waypoints.
Explore by Origin: A report that helps Innovation Distillery users explore Innovations by following a journey that uses geographic or organization origins as key waypoints.
Innovation Class: Denotes whether an innovation proposes a New Target for a disease, or a New Compound with a disease-modifying effect. A New Target refers to a gene or protein presented in a primary article as a newly identified target for a specific disease indication, even if that Target may have been used for other indications. A New Compound refers to a novel compound that has potential relevance to a disease indication and whose development is described in a primary article. Primary articles that propose a New Target, and a New Compound against that Target, receive both tags.
Innovations (with a number below it): In the native or default state, this number reflects the count of innovations added to the Innovation Distillery since December 2014. This number is dynamic, changing whenever the user applies a filter (including Search).
Innovations (within Narrow by Affiliated Target): In the default state, this shows the number of innovations added to the Innovation Distillery since December 2014 that address this Target. The number will change to reflect the number of innovations that match filtering criteria and/or keyword searches.
Journal: An abbreviation of the peer-reviewed Journal that published the Primary Article.
Licensing Status: Denotes whether an innovation is licensed, unlicensed, available for licensing or partnering, or the status is unknown/unavailable. Licensing Status reflects BioCentury’s assessment at the time BioCentury Analyst Briefing was published. BioCentury contacts Corresponding Authors directly to inquire about the licensing status of innovations, and also consults the Disclosures statements included in the Primary Articles describing innovations.
Narrow by Affiliated Expert (Author): Bar graph visualization showing top academic Affiliated Experts in the Innovation Distillery. Affiliated Experts are the Corresponding Authors of each Primary Article describing an innovation. Click on an Affiliated Expert of interest to narrow the Innovation Distillery data table and visualizations to only innovations published by that Expert.
Narrow by Affiliated Institution: Bar graph visualization showing top academic Affiliated Institutions in the Innovation Distillery. Affiliated Institutions are the primary affiliations for the corresponding authors of each Primary Article describing an innovation, as of the time of that Article’s publication. Click on an Affiliated Institution of interest to narrow the Innovation Distillery report to only include innovations from that Institution.
Narrow by Country: Treemap visualization showing top Countries by origination of innovations in the Innovation Distillery. Click on a Country of interest to narrow the Innovation Distillery report to only include innovations with origins in that Country. For the full list of Countries, see the Select Geography filter.
Narrow by Disease: Treemap visualization showing top Disease categories in the Innovation Distillery. Click on a Disease category of interest to narrow the Innovation Distillery report to innovations affiliated with that disease. For a full list of Disease categories, use the Select Diseases/Indications filter.

Narrow by Innovation Class: The Donut chart visualization shows all innovations in the Distillery, classified as a New (Molecular) Target or Compound. Primary articles that include both a new Target and a new Compound are classified (tagged) as containing both. Click on your Innovation Class of interest to narrow the Innovation Distillery Report to only include innovations of that type. These innovation classifications are only available for innovations added to the Innovation Distillery after April 2022.

Patent Application Filed: A Smart Filter that selects innovations affiliated with a patent application filing, at the time of publication. BioCentury contacts Corresponding Authors directly to inquire about the patent status of innovations, and also consults the Disclosures statements included in the Primary Articles describing innovations.
Patent Status: Denotes whether an innovation is patented, unpatented, or has a patent application filed. Patent Status reflects BioCentury’s assessment at the time the BioCentury Analyst Briefing was published. Patent status Undisclosed or Unknown are also indicated when appropriate. BioCentury contacts Corresponding Authors directly to inquire about the patent status of innovations, and also consults the Disclosures statements included in the Primary Articles describing innovations.
Patented: A Smart Filter that selects innovations affiliated with an approved patent at the time of publication. BioCentury contacts Corresponding Authors directly to inquire about the patent status of innovations, and also consults the Disclosures statements included in the Primary Articles describing innovations.
Patient Sample Data: A Smart Filter that selects innovations supported by data from patient sample studies in the Primary Article. Evidence from studies using patient samples can increase the potential for preclinical findings to translate into clinical benefits.
Primary Article: The title or Digital Object Identifier (doi) for the primary research article where the innovation was sourced. The hyperlink directs users to the Primary Article on the Journal publisher's website.
Primary Article Link: The Digital Object Identifier (doi) is a string of numbers, letters and symbols used to uniquely identify a Primary Article and to provide it with a permanent web address. When the Innovation Distillery data table is exported, the hyperlink in the Primary Article column is no longer present, so this link serves as the access point to the article on the Journal website.
Read Me with Icon: An “About this Dashboard” pop-up that provides an overview of the Innovation Distillery Dashboard, including its purpose, user guide, criteria for prioritizing coverage, and key instructions to note.
Search: The Distillery Search algorithm relies on a Keyword based query method. The string query you supply runs against the:
Select Diseases/Indications: Filter to select innovations based on the Disease area (e.g., “Cancer”), or the specific Indication (e.g., “Breast cancer”) it addresses.
Note: Disease area and Indication categories are standardized across the Innovation Distillery and BCIQ.
Select Geography: Filter that selects innovations based on the Region, Country and/or State (for the U.S.) of the Affiliated Institution in which it originated.
Smart Filters: Filters to help Innovation Distillery users quickly identify innovations with indicators that convey a higher probability of translation to medicine.
Note: Only innovations added to the Innovation Distillery after 2Q, 2022 contain Smart Filter data attributes.
Standard Indication: The Indication (e.g., “Breast cancer”) affiliated with the innovation. The Indication categories are the same ones used by BioCentury’s BCIQ Database.
Target (within Narrow by Affiliated Target): Filter to select innovations based on the name of the Molecular Target that is modulated in the Primary Article. The Molecular Target names are the same ones used across BioCentury’s BCIQ Database.
Target/Pathway: The Molecular Target or Biological Pathway modulated by the innovation.
